Bewildering Universe

This painting was printed in an edition of 1000. The image was originally created as a fold-out poster for Fox Kids when the Sam & Max animated series was on the air. For whatever reason I thought it would be fun to do a "what's wrong with this picture" idea. The poster was done as an ink drawing with rough marker color guide for the digital colorist to refer to. A collector bought the ink drawing so before I shipped it to him I had it reproduced onto illustration board so that I could paint on top of the line drawing with acrylics.

When I wrote the the legend I decided to make the call-outs completely incongruous. I don't have a clue if any of the tiny readers of Fox Kids magazine laughed or could even make head or tail out of any of this. At the time it never occurred to me to worry about it, though if I was to do it all again I would only rethink my use of the half-assed term "wacked-out".

  4. Woah. Those pictures on the wall would later reappear in Momma Bosco's lab. I love inside references like that!

  6. I saw this draw for the first time in the Surfin' the Highway Hardcover Edition, but the "Something's not right here" picture is even more hilarious.

  8. Hey, Steve. You should totally do one of those "Spot the difference between these two pictures" things that are all the rage nowadays. You'd make a mint!

  11. I also still have the original. Probably the only thing (aside from some tick stuff) I kept from that fox kids mail out zine. I loved it then and I love it now.

  12. I still have that fox kids mini poster, I think it might be the oldest shred of paper I've held onto that wasn't a comic book. I used to try and use number 15 on the list to explain to my friends what the joke was supposed to be but they never got it and I was only 10 at the time so I probably wasn't explaining it that well.

  16. Oh my god, this is amazing! I saved this poster from the original magazine, and it has hung in every house, apartment, studio, and garret I have lived in since...but I didn't save the key. I have wondered for years if anyone might have saved it and posted it online, but only finally thought to look for it today.

I would pay many American dollars for a print of the top image, with the gorgeous coloring. You, sir, are my hero.
