Sam & Max Wraparound

Here's the back/front cover painting for the Shout Factory Animated Series DVD. I was pretty happy with the way the paint went down. Using acrylic rather than watercolor I sometimes apply too much paint and end up plastering instead of painting. I spent my young life gazing at paintings by Jack Davis who could seemingly do lively and beautiful wash paintings in his sleep. I'd still love to be able to nail them the way he can.

  1. just got my Sam & Max Animated series DVD in the mail today and I have to say the box art is amazing. Is the sticker that comes in the box weather proof? It looks like it is but I don't want to stick it on my rear window just to have it melt off :(

  2. A cropped version of that is the image they currently display on the TV Tropes page.

  3. Swizzler121-- The sticker doesn't look weather proof to me. Maybe I should do a new "protected by Sam & Max" car sticker.

Mr Siegal-- Thanks for the link. All those designations make Sam & Max seem so much more relevant to pop culture.

  4. Beware of TVtropes... they'll eat your whole time.

Aaah Jack Davis and the old MAD magazines. Good times, good times.

  5. I remember Jack Davis from the old Mad Magazine issues.

To be honest, when I first read Monkeys Violating the Heavenly Temple and the other old Sam and Max comics, I got a big Mad vibe out of them. You know, how there's so much crazy stuff going on in the background that the main events of the comic seem almost like an afterthought. All that detail was a very nice touch. If you ever make a new Sam and Max comic again, Steve, I hope you include that same sort of style again. :)

  6. I've always loved your acrylic work, it always inspires me to break out the paints. I'm not as good as you but one day I'll get there, maybe, someday... *shrug*

  7. RAnthonyMahan -- Thanks. Mad was more of an influence when I was a kid than any of the superhero comics, though I liked those too. The background detail was added to keep the inking process somewhat tolerable.

Silly Stell -- Keep at it. It's worth it.

  8. Is that a Day of the Tentacle reference I see there along the bottom? I would love to see a new DOTT game, or maybe even a comic.

  10. Lol. I guess I'm just looking into things too hard. Awesome painting though. I especially like the outline of Max on the wall.
